Health Insurance Glossary

Private Room

In health insurance, a private room is a hospital room that is occupied by only one patient at a time. Private rooms are more private, comfortable, and convenient than shared rooms, which are occupied by two or more patients.

Private room coverage is an optional benefit that some health insurance policies may include. If a policy includes private room coverage, the insurance company may pay some or all of the extra cost of a private room in a hospital above and beyond the cost of a shared room. However, the amount of coverage may be limited or excluded, such as a maximum number of days or a maximum amount per day.
